چکیده

Evidence from paleoclimatic archives suggests that the ocean atmosphere system has undergone dramatic and abrupt changes with widespread consequences in the past. Climatic changes are most pronounced in the North Atlantic region where annual mean temperature can change by 10C and more within a few decades. Climate models are capable of simulating some features of abrupt climate change. These same models also indicate that changes of this type may be triggered by global warming. Here we summarize what is known about such future changes and discuss the state of our knowledge about these potential threats to the stability of the Earth System.

RAPID TRANSITIONS OF THE THERMOHALINE OCEAN CIRCULATION A Modelling Perspective

This chapter discusses the stability of the Atlantic thermohaline circulation with special emphasis on the critical thresholds and state transitions found in model experiments. The thermohaline ocean circulation is a major heat transport mechanism which causes the relatively mild climate in the North Atlantic region (including Europe) in the modern times. The formation of North Atlantic Deep Wa...

Thermohaline Ocean Circulation

The thermohaline circulation is that part of the ocean circulation which is driven by fluxes of heat and freshwater across the sea surface and subsequent interior mixing of heat and salt. The term thus refers to a driving mechanism. Important features of the thermohaline circulation are deep water formation, spreading of deep waters partly through deep boundary currents, upwelling and near-surf...

Modeling of tidal currents effect on PersianGulf density using MIKE model

General circulation of Persian Gulf has a cyclonic pattern that affected by tide, wind stress and thermohaline force. Although tidal force is very effective in values of current speed, but thermohaline force is dominant in long time because tidal forcing has a short period and returning nature. Tide and density parameters are important in navigating and shipping, especially when ships approachi...

Last Glacial Maximum ocean thermohaline circulation: PMIP2 model intercomparisons and data constraints

[1] The ocean thermohaline circulation is important for transports of heat and the carbon cycle. We present results from PMIP2 coupled atmosphere-ocean simulations with four climate models that are also being used for future assessments. These models give very different glacial thermohaline circulations even with comparable circulations for present. An integrated approach using results from thes...

Possible Economic Impacts of a Shutdown of the Thermohaline Circulation: an Application of FUND Working Paper FNU-42

Climate change can lead to a substantial reduction of the strength of the thermohaline circulation in the world oceans. This is often thought to have severe consequences particularly on the North Atlantic region and Northern and Western Europe. The integrated assessment model FUND is used to estimate the extent of these impacts. The results indicate that, owing to a slower warming (rather than ...

Dynamics of the Thermohaline Circulation under Wind Forcing

The ocean thermohaline circulation, also called meridional overturning circulation, is caused by water density contrasts. This circulation has large capacity of carrying heat around the globe and it thus affects the energy budget and further affects the climate. We consider a thermohaline circulation model in the meridional plane under external wind forcing. We show that, when there is no wind ...
